Pros

Pedersen is an extremely capable lecturer. He explains concepts in detail to the extent that he will test you on it, and it is consequently always very clear what to spend time studying for. Problem sets, as others have said, are very relevant and very worthwhile to do-- in fact, I doubt it is possible to do well in Pedersen's classes without doing them. Exams are very fair. Trick questions are exceedingly rare, and even the synthesis problems are very doable with some time. That being said, test curves are still generous due to people not studying hard enough. Do the problem sets, keep track of problems worth redoing before exams, and you should do fine.

Cons

Lectures can feel long and monotonous, even for me (and I love 3B to death). IT is often difficult to write down everything Pedersen says, and the lecture might not be webcasted, so make a friend in case you miss something. Pedersen can sometimes come off as arrogant and slightly condescending, though I'm quite sure he doesn't mean to. Problem sets range in length from on the short side, to very, very long. And working through the problem sets is typically a long and arduous process. Visit GSI office hours or the SLC if you get totally stuck or confused. Do not wait till three days before the midterm to catch up on the problem sets-- you likely won't do well.

Pros

He is the reason i got an A in 3B, GO TO CLASS and if take the time to do the problem sets (and understand them) you will be fine. Its a tough class but Pedersen is one of my favorite professors at Cal and the best ochem prof we have. Awesome lecturer if you are paying attentio.n

Cons

Early lecture time but you will fail if you don't go, the book is not a substitute.
